Shawn Mendes not only killed his performance of “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back”, the nineteen-year-old Canadian singer also took home the AMA for Favorite Adult Contemporary artist this year, which marks his first AMA win EVER. Not bad considering it was only his second AMA show to date, AND he beat out Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars for the award.
When it came to the New Artist of the Year award, Niall Horan beat out Julia Michaels, James Arthur, Post Malone, and Rae Sremmurd to take home the AMA. This one kind of feels like kiiiind of a stretch since Niall isn’t exactly a “new” artist thanks to his 1D days, but we won’t hold that against him because we are LOVING his music as a solo artist, and he should totally be recognized for it.
One of the most emotional wins of the night went to Linkin Park for Favorite Alternative Rock artist. The band’s lead singer, Chester Bennington, tragically committed suicide earlier this year, so the award was a moving tribute to Chester and the legacy he left behind with his music.
In the Rap/Hip Hop categories, Drake won favorite artist, meanwhile Kendrick Lamar won for Favorite Album. It’s great that they each won a category because honestly I do not want to have to choose between those two. And no surprise here, the Chainsmokers won favorite EDM artist.
While a lot of the awards went to the men tonight–we see you AMAs, and we’re expecting you to make up for it next year–a few big wins did go to the ladies. Lady Gaga won Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, meanwhile Beyonce won Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist.
And Diana Ross was of course honored with the Lifetime Achievement award, and not only was the tribute to her work incredibly moving, her medley performance of some of her greatest hits was nothing short of ICONIC.
Of course, one artist absolutely DOMINATED the American Music Awards this year, and that artist is the one and only Bruno Mars. Bruno swept the AMAs winning Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Album, Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist, Video of the Year for “That’s What I Like”, AND the Artist of the Year Award. And despite not being there in person to collect his many trophies, Bruno sent a video to thank his “hooligans” for the award…
