OTTAWA — The Ottawa Humane Society says a beagle in its care has a long road to recovery after police found it in the woods suffering from a gunshot wound.
The humane society has been caring for the dog since last week, after officers found her wandering near Ottawa.
“She was in critical condition when she came in,” said Sharon Miko, director of operations at Ottawa Humane Society.
“We’ve arranged a specialist surgeon to perform surgery to do a repair. The gunshot wound was to the face and around the ear and it’s most likely she will lose one eye.”
The dog, who staff named Sadie Mae, will undergo surgery on Wednesday. Miko says it’s possible that she might have to go through a second surgery depending on the outcome.
The events leading up to her shooting are unclear, but Miko said a veterinarian has identified that she was shot from long range.
Miko added it’s possible the dog was injured in a hunting accident.
“We just don’t know, at this point no owner has come forward,” said Miko.
“It is quite unusual, we haven’t seen this type of thing in several years.”
She says that the recovery process will likely take a couple of months, at which point they’re hoping that someone will adopt Sadie Mae.
